Reader fit study · Weird Comics #4

Start with these difficult layouts

Manual comparison only. No automatic fit choice, new panel detector, or production-reader change.

Page & region

Selected region

Outlines are review candidates. Orange marks your selection. Overlapping stops intentionally retain context on irregular pages.

Compare the fit

Manual zoom 1×

Drag to pan. Arrow keys change regions; + / − zoom. A wide panel can be read in landscape or enlarged and panned left to right.

Working rules to review

Start with the whole page, then contain each panel, including its speech and captions. Empty space is acceptable.
Wide panels: show the composition first. Try landscape; otherwise zoom and pan horizontally. Cover is a comparison, not the default.
Prose: fit a complete column to width and scroll down. Do not cut across neighbouring columns.
Irregular panels and insets: preserve a context view before detail stops. Boundaries alone cannot establish reading order.
Retain manual zoom and a page overview. These scans have limited detail; enlargement cannot recreate missing lettering.

What this study measures

440 × 956 logical pixels at 3×, based on the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s 1320 × 2868 display. This is a modeled canvas, not an on-device Safari validation.

Assumed safe insets: portrait 62 top / 34 bottom; landscape 62 left and right / 21 bottom. Content also has an 8px breathing margin. Browser controls can reduce actual viewing space; the preview scale is reported.

13 pages have hand-marked regions. Other pages retain existing, unapproved candidates. All 68 original scans are available here. Source: Internet Archive.
