Complex layouts · reader fit study

Choose a difficult layout

Manual comparison only. No automatic fit choice, new panel detector, or production-reader change.

Composition & viewpoint

Selected viewpoint

Orange is the selected viewpoint; cyan is the visible camera window. A viewpoint can be a detail within one scene, not a separate panel. The dashed line on the spread marks its midpoint.

Compare the fit

Manual zoom 1×

Drag to pan. Arrow keys change regions; + / − zoom. A wide panel can be read in landscape or enlarged and panned left to right.

What these cases change

Treat a confirmed spread as ONE canvas. Never divide it at the midpoint merely because it is wide.
Show the composition, move through hand-selected reading details, then return to the composition. Use Next to try the draft route.
Give small insets their own scale. Include speech balloons and characters extending outside the drawn frame.
A giant scene may need several overlapping viewpoints. These are camera positions, not newly invented panels.
Keep a one-tap way back to the whole. Compare landscape, but do not require rotation to advance.
Original resolution and tiny lettering set limits. This spread’s web image is only 940 × 714; a sharper source would improve close-up reading.

What this study measures

440 × 956 logical pixels at 3×, based on the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s 1320 × 2868 display. This is a modeled canvas, not an on-device Safari validation.

Assumed safe insets: portrait 62 top / 34 bottom; landscape 62 left and right / 21 bottom. Content also has an 8px breathing margin. Browser controls can reduce actual viewing space; the preview scale is reported.

All viewpoints and their order were marked by hand for these four examples. This is a proposed route, not creator-approved sequencing. Earlier standard-page study. Pepper&Carrot artwork is CC BY 4.0; original source links and credits appear above for each case.
